Wanaka features some of the best rock climbing in New Zealand. With more than 200 routes from grades 9 to 30 (some of which require natural protection, some are bolted and there are even a few routes that can be top roped). This allows everyone, from rock stars to beginners to enjoy the rock climbing in Wanaka.
Most of Wanaka's best rock climbing is in the Matukituki Valley, between the Mount Aspiring National Park and Lake Wanaka. The scenery in this area is stunning, in fact many of the climbs have Treble Cone Ski Area as a back drop.
Wanaka Rock Climbing - This guide is published by the Wanaka Rock Climbing Club. The guide is available from a number of outlets in Wanaka including Good Sports located on Dunmore Street and the BP Garage. Proceeds from the book are used for local route maintenance and upkeep.
Wanaka Rock - offers trips that range from single day courses for beginners wanting to learn the basics of climbing to multi-day adventures for those who've got the bug and want to learn more. If you're short of time you can still enjoy the thrill of rock climbing or abseiling with one of their half day trips.
